Tis the season for Fresh Garden Tomatoes, the perfect topping for a Broadbent BLT. My much-anticipated fried green tomatoes were delicious.  Tim Farmer’s Facebook post explained how-to preserve green tomatoes by canning them.  He claims they will taste just like fresh ones.  I see this experiment in my very near future.  Go to Tim Farmers Country Kitchen Facebook page for great cooking tips and recipes. About a week has passed and my garden has beautiful red ripe tomatoes.  One or two tomatoes are ready for the picking and...

Recently, we decided to play with the idea of having custom merchandise printed to sell here at the Kuttawa market. Over the course of the discussion, we thought it could be fun to try and come up with some taglines. Nothing overly complicated, just one-liners and quips that would be in line with what we do here at Broadbent’s. They say that necessity is the mother of invention- To that effect, I say that Pintrest is the fun, crafty aunt. A large portion of our inspiration, design-wise, came from Pintrest. Here are...

Let’s face it. This has been a weird year so far. With all of the uncertainty in the world, things can look dark. But, as the adage goes- “It is always darkest, just before dawn.”  People may feel disconnected from their friends, coworkers, and extended family; but the nuclear family seems to be an exception. I cannot tell you how many people I have heard say something to the effect of “I can’t remember the last time my family all sat down and ate at the dinner table before...

A lot goes into what we do here at Broadbent’s, and for that reason, we take great pride in what we do. So, when one of our customers, a company known as “Mantry”, recently wrote about the different bacons they have used and included us in a blog that was titled “The Best Mail-Order Bacon”, we were floored. Below is a snippet from their write-up that we felt described Broadbent’s Country Bacon perfectly. “A still sunrise, a mug of strong coffee, and the aroma of bacon crisping in cast...

This month, as we begin to ponder all that we are thankful for, I would like to highlight one thing that often gets taken for granted… I have been fortunate enough to make friends and acquaintances from all around the globe. I have heard life stories from individuals who have called some of our planet’s most nightmarish vistas home. I know a man who grew up in prosperity in Syria, before civil war wracked the country and he had to flee. People from the former Soviet Union where the...

Looking back on the past 20 years, the first thought I had, is that it has flown by.  In the fall of 1999, Broadbent’s 33rd catalog went out in the mail. However, as the new owner of Broadbent’s, it was my very first catalog.  That year was quite an adventure.  The printer of the catalog, kept all photography and files at his office.  So I contacted him for direction…  To my dismay, I learned that he was under the impression we would no longer be printing a catalog,...

While working on the upcoming fall catalog, I noticed how many times we used the word “Delicious”.  I needed a few synonyms to replace it, and yet still describe Broadbent foods as- well, delicious. So, I pulled out my copy of “The New American Roget’s College Thesaurus”, (the actual book), which I bought in the 1970’s.  I can’t tell you the date it was published, because the cover and front couple of pages are missing. Here’s what I found: “Delicious-  Adj.-  delectable, luscious, toothsome, palatable, savory.  See TASTE.”   I was familiar with all...
