Broadbent B & B Foods: A Brief Company History

Broadbent B & B Foods is a Kentucky producer of Country Ham, Bacon, and Sausage.  The company was founded by Smith Broadbent of Cadiz, Kentucky.  They began selling their products on their family farm in 1909.  In 1999 my husband, Ronny and I bought the company from Smith Broadbent, III.  To say the least the last 18 years have been a true blessing.  Although it’s not been all smooth sailing as any business owner will tell you, we were blessed to buy a company with delicious products made from old family recipes that are still a time honored tradition.  We have not altered the recipes and pretty much do things the same way.  We just took the solid foundation of core products and have exposed them to folks all over the United States.  The results have exceeded any expectation we could ever set as a goal.

We did not have funds for much advertising in the beginning.  So God took care of the advertising for us.  We won our first Kentucky State Fair Grand Champion Award in 2000 and have won 11 times total.  Our 11th win was just last Thursday.  The Broadbent Family had won 7 times prior to our taking over the company to give a combined 18 grand champion hams.  Our Pepper Bacon was named the Outstanding Meat, Pate & Seafood at the International New York Fancy Food Show two times.  We have won Grand Champion Awards at the American Cured Meat Association Competition and at the National Country Ham Association Competition.  In the past few weeks, our bacon was mentioned in an article by Food & Wine Magazine.  Each and every award is only a dust collector if we fail to give God the credit for them because we just make country ham, bacon and sausage and He does the rest.

In 2008 we built a new facility in Kuttawa, Kentucky.  This doubled our curing and production space.  We felt sure this would be all the space we would ever need.  But with continued growth, we just completed another 5,000 square feet to double our curing space again.  Our Country Ham and Bacon can be found on menu’s in New York, Chicago, Nashville, Louisville and Lexington just to mention a few.  Our company consists of a Mail Order Division, a Wholesale Division and a Market & Deli located at our facility.

Amazing things have happened and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast has been at the top of the list.  We have had Grand Champion Hams sell there from $37,250 to Two Million Dollars each.  This year’s ham sold for $325,000.  To be mentioned as a part of such a great charity has been a true honor.  I had a customer in the market read a sign about the “Two Million Dollar Ham” and ask if we had a poverty level ham he could buy.  Great news for our customers-they can experience the delicious flavor of a Two Million Dollar Ham for a much more reasonable price.  Last, of all, we always want to mention and thank our loyal customers, because they are our greatest asset.
