A lot goes into what we do here at Broadbent’s, and for that reason, we take great pride in what we do. So, when one of our customers, a company known as “Mantry”, recently wrote about the different bacons they have used and included us in a blog that was titled “The Best Mail-Order Bacon”, we were floored. Below is a snippet from their write-up that we felt described Broadbent’s Country Bacon perfectly. “A still sunrise, a mug of strong coffee, and the aroma of bacon crisping in cast...

While working on the upcoming fall catalog, I noticed how many times we used the word “Delicious”.  I needed a few synonyms to replace it, and yet still describe Broadbent foods as- well, delicious. So, I pulled out my copy of “The New American Roget’s College Thesaurus”, (the actual book), which I bought in the 1970’s.  I can’t tell you the date it was published, because the cover and front couple of pages are missing. Here’s what I found: “Delicious-  Adj.-  delectable, luscious, toothsome, palatable, savory.  See TASTE.”   I was familiar with all...

Deviled Eggs (or Dressed Eggs as my Mother-In-Law called them) are, without question, a part of most Easter Dinners.  I found this simple recipe from “Southern Living” that sounds much like the recipe I follow! The difference? I never measure anything! Just add and taste until I decide they taste how they’re supposed to. Here’s a recipe link with measurements:  https://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/basic-deviled-eggs. Here’s a helpful tip you’ll find in that recipe that I didn’t know. “After cooking, drain immediately and fill the saucepan with cold water and ice. Tap each egg...

It’s all about the aging process here at Broadbent’s.  We age our Country Ham 6 to 18 months.  It’s been twenty years since Ronny and I purchased Broadbent’s.  The sale was final on April 1, 1999.  So while our hams have been aging, we’ve aged as well.  That’s right; it’s been 20 years since we began our lives as Broadbent’s Mom & Pop Business owners.  With two children of our own at the time, we certainly fit the bill! At the time of purchase, we knew the old-fashioned Country...

Here, in beautiful western Kentucky, we are now firmly in the middle of what we are hoping is Winter's last hoorah (Y'all say a prayer for us). The snow and ice that we saw this weekend aren't uncommon for our area this time of year, so we have learned to prepare. Just like a squirrel with his acorns, we stash away goodies to tide us over until the thaw. Whether your mornings are crisp, or dreary, there is no better way to start a cold day than with...

When it comes to food, sometimes a nontraditional pairing can bring out the best of separate flavors. Experimenting in the kitchen, whether it is trying something new and fanciful for date night or letting children blend their favorites can bring fun to the kitchen. We encourage any level of cook to look for ways to use common and familiar foods together to create something different. The five primary flavors are Sweet, Sour, Bitter, Salty and Savory. If you start by selecting two foods from different categories, you can begin...

Store cooked ham in the freezer, up to a month and in the refrigerator about a week. One way to save time during the week is...

Grits are a staple in the south, whether they are prepared for breakfast, lunch or dinner. In almost every southern movie, you’ll find snappy one liners about grits. If you didn’t know, Grits are coarsely ground corn kernels that are boiled with water or milk to create a creamy porridge like dish. They come in stone ground, hominy, quick and instant. Many cooks have their own preferences about which ones they will use.   “I never make the instant kind – some things a Southerner just won’t do!” Paula Deen   At...
